TabSafe Medication Management System
Helps Elderly Maintain Independence
INDIANAPOLIS - February 16, 2010 -- With the aging population and healthcare concerns at the forefront of national debate, a new technology for dispensing medication promises to help keep senior citizens in their homes longer, thus avoiding costly full-time care.
TabSafe, a high-tech medication management system developed by TabSafe Medical Services of Georgia and manufactured locally by Aircom Manufacturing of Indianapolis, is already receiving high marks for incorporating innovative technology into an exceptionally user-friendly unit.
"Since using TabSafe, my mother has been able to preserve her independence and remain more in control for the past 5 years,” said Linda Hobbs, whose mother, Louise Parker, uses TabSafe daily.
Here’s how TabSafe works:
• A caregiver or pharmacist loads the “smart” cartridges with a monthly supply of pills.
• The cartridges are programmed to release the right medications at the right times throughout each day using the TabSafe website.
• At the indicated time, the TabSafe unit will light up, beep and provide voice prompts, for both audio and visual cues that it is time to take the medication. Only the correct pills will be released into the TabSafe drawer at the bottom of the unit.
• If medicine is not retrieved, the unit will continue to signal every 15 minutes, and an electronic notification will be sent out to the patient and/or a caregiver, via a phone call.
The technology is cutting-edge, but the concept is simple: Helping senior citizens take their medicine accurately keeps them in the comfort of their own homes longer. In fact, incorrect taking of medication is directly responsible for 40% of hospital admissions and accounts for 23% of all new admissions into extended care facilities.
"This is game-changing telemedicine technology," said Dr. Stephen L. Axelrod, M.D., who has joined the TabSafe management team. "I have been in healthcare for over 30 years, and the TabSafe medication dispensing system is one of the most exciting things I have seen. Managing medications, with alerting, monitoring and active follow up, has been proven clinically to be much safer and more cost-effective. It could save billions of dollars and, more importantly, thousands of lives."
Dr. Axelrod continues, "TabSafe President Jim Chiavetta's vision and his committed team, along with Aircom Manufacturing, has enabled TabSafe to produce this cost-effective, best-of-breed system.”
Aircom has been involved in every step of getting this revolutionary system to market, including product design and development, prototyping and manufacturing.
